Telling His Parents_Part-1_73 Days Till Wedding.

Dear Blog

I just realized that in the last post I didn’t write about how we told his parents. I began by telling you that I was with my future-mother-in-law looking at a picture she took of us, but then I forgot to mention it again. On the first night of the proposal we told my parents and the following night we told his parents.

Therefore without much ado, Diary Entry #5 Part 1 (I say “part 1” because I have an important meeting tomorrow and it is very late at night, so I doubt I will have time to write the whole day down.)

Diary Entry #5

[December 23rd

Dear Diary

It’s almost 2:00 o’clock. Gerard said he was going to pick me up at half past one…or was it half past two? In any case, I guess it’s just as well that he didn’t arrive early or on time. My mom and I just had a big fight about him. She doesn’t understand why I’ve agreed to marry him. She doesn’t approve of it. She thinks I’m being foolish and that I’m jeopardizing my future.

“He is gay!” she screamed at me. “How could he possibly make you happy? How could you consider marrying him?! I will not pay for you to have a fake wedding…”

“Mother!” I was sitting in the living room rubbing my head. Her screaming was causing me to have a headache. “It isn’t for sure that we might get married. This is just something that happened and I agreed to it because we both love each other. Maybe it’s not the typical romantic type of love that we see in movies or the type of romantic love that I’ve searched for when I date. But we respect each other. He cares for me as I am and I care for him as he is…”

“So all this is a farce? You’re not going to eventually get married to him?”

“I don’t know yet…” I wanted to tell her the truth that we were just pulling this off until for awhile. “I don’t expect you to fully understand my decision mom. I just want you to support it. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on your only daughter’s wedding just because she is getting married to someone you don’t approve of then you don’t have to. I…We will find another way to finance a wedding. He is graduating this coming spring semester and I will graduate next fall semester. We will find a way to work things out. “

My mom finally sat down on the sofa across from me. I could tell that she was still very upset.

“I can’t deal with this.” She said. “I just don’t understand why…”

I knew I was going to have to lie…and I regret what I said as soon as it came out of my mouth. “He swings both ways mom. He’s gone out with guys, but now he’s wants to start a ‘normal’ family. I would like that very much as well…”

My mom stared at me. I could tell she was still trying to figure out things in her mind. “I can’t do this right now. We will talk about this later tonight.”

“Gerard is picking me up in a little bit. We are going over to tell his mother and then his father. I will try and be home early.”

“Do whatever you want. I don’t care.” She spat out at me as she walked into the kitchen.

I could feel tears forming in my eyes as she said that. I wonder if what I’ve gotten myself into will ruin our relationship. Maybe I should back out? I felt like the house was suffocating me, so I walked outside. I looked down the street to see if I could spot Gerard’s car coming. We needed to talk before we headed over to his parents place.

We had agreed to go to his mother’s house first since it was closest and then drive to his father’s place. Gerard’s parents got divorced when he was a teenager, and even though they ended things badly, they were always present for their children. I have never met his father, so I’m a bit nervous to find out what he is like… His mother on the other hand, is a very strong-minded person who can be very sweet or your worst nightmare.

I hope that we can have a good relationship for the sake of the whole family. If my mom and her team up to go against Gerard and I being engaged I don’t think I’d be able to go through with this. I don’t think his mother knows of his sexual preference, but I’m sure she suspects. I’ll find out soon enough…

] END OF DIARY ENTRY #5 PART 1

It is late and this was one of the hardest entries to edit. I can’t stay up longer, but I will finish editing it tomorrow and upload it.

My cel phone is beeping...I wonder who is texting me at this late hour? My caller ID says it is from Gerard… Ah, the nightly “Good-night Love” message…

Some days he is very thoughtful and sweet. Some days he isn’t…

He screwed up the other day, and this time I won’t let him off easy…

*Are you sure you want to delete the text message?*

*YES*

*Message Deleted*

Good.

I have to go to bed.

Goodnight.

Proposal_Engagement 74 Days till Wedding

Dear Blog
I spoke on the phone with Gerard today. He still has four more days left before he comes back home. We didn’t say much over the phone. I guess things are still a bit tense. I spent the day over at his mother’s house helping her set up the Surround Sound Home-Theater we got her for her birthday. I love spending time with her, she is the sweetest person. I also love how she appreciates the smallest things I do. Gerard knows how to cook and decorate, while I know how to fix mechanical things and set up technological things. We complement each other by teaching one another basic survival tips every day.
I sat in the living room while my future-mother-in-law made us some ice-tea. She has pictures Gerard’s older sister and younger brother on a table by the window. In between those pictures I spotted one that she took of me and Gerard. It is one of my favorite pictures. It is the first picture of us as a couple. It was taken the night we came over to her house to announce our engagement…

Diary Entry #4

[December 22nd

Dear Diary

4:30pm
Today is the day. Tonight is Gerard’s business Christmas party. I am nervous as anything. I had a hairdresser’s appointment early this afternoon to get my hair done. My hair is very slick and straight so there is not much that can be done to it. I had the hairdresser wash it, shine it up and French braid the top part. I think it looks elegant and nice. Mom picked up the silver dress from the Dry Cleaners store for me while I was out.
I just ate lunch. Now I better go finish wrapping the Christmas gifts for my family and then fix my nails. I don’t think the bright Christmas-red nail polish I have on right now would look nice with the silver dress. Also, I want my hand to look flawless when he “proposes”. Haha. Makes me wonder HOW he will propose.

7:30pm
Gerard just texted me on my cel phone, he said he is 10 minutes away from my house. I cannot believe the evening is here already. My heart is pounding in my chest and I am not sure if it is from excitement or if I’m nervous. Perhaps it is a little of both.
Mom and dad are downstairs eating dinner. They heated up a plate of chicken and vegetables for me, but I can’t eat. I just finished touching up my makeup and changed my stockings. Just my luck, I ripped the first pair as I put them on in a hurry. Thanks to mom for buying two pairs ‘just in case’.
I look in the mirror once again, looking for any imperfection, as usual. I expected to find a more beautiful woman looking back at me, but instead I just saw good old me staring back. Even with makeup on and borrowed jewelry, I couldn’t see the beautiful person I wanted to see staring back. Gerard always told me he thought I was pretty and cute, but for him, I always wanted to look beautiful. Gerard’s boyfriend, Bryce was the first person to tell me that I was beautiful being just me.

I remember when I first met Bryce back in high school. We took a journalism class together even though he was a year older than me. He was the happiest person I ever met. He always had a smile on his face and he always had something cheerful share. I was happy to have made a friend in that class, but at the time it was short lived. The class only lasted one semester, January till May. School let out for summer vacations and he graduated. I didn’t see him again until I found out he was dating my classmate Gerard, which was two years later. We bonded again, although a first I felt like he didn’t like me since I had a crush on his man. However, after some time I realized it wasn’t so. He in fact liked me a lot as a friend.
The date October 11th is very clear in my head. It was the first time I realized how much Bryce cared for me as a friend. I was at a birthday party at a career classmate’s house when the guy I liked showed up with another girl. I was hurt since the guy had told me he wanted to go out with me. I felt like a fool. When I confronted him about it he laughed in my face, shoved me and told me the most horrid thing ever. He told me I wasn’t beautiful enough for him, that I was the ugliest girl he’d seen. I was so hurt. I couldn’t control my tears. I felt like a fool in front of my whole generation. Unexpectedly a young man walked out of the crowd of classmates and embraced me in a hug. It was Bryce. He hugged me as my tears flowed; turned to the guy I had liked and reprimanded him. Then still holding me in his arms he lead me to his car, sat me down and we talked. It was the sweetest thing ever. As I wiped away my tears, he looked me straight in the eye and told me he thought I was beautiful. Straightforward, plain and simple. It was not a pity comment, he really meant it. I can’t remember there being a moment in my life that meant that much.

The door bell just rang. Gerard is here.

1:30am ish?
Technically today is a new day…
The Christmas party is over. I am officially engaged with Gerard…
This evening couldn’t have gone better. I have imagined many different scenarios of how I would have liked my future husband to propose. Gerard topped them all.
He arrived on time to pick me up at my house. He shared a quick “hello-goodbye” with my parents and then we rushed off to the party. He looked very nice in his navy blue suite. He did not bring me any flowers; I guess I was a little disappointed. We shared some small talk in the car, but nothing exciting. I had never gone to one of his office parties before so I was a little nervous about knowing how to act appropriately. (Gerard says I worry too much about making a good impression. He says I worry too much in general…which is probably horribly true.)

I’ll skip anymore boring details and get straight into the office environment. The room where the party was being held was beautifully decorated in Christmas colors. There was a live band playing Christmas and ballads.

Walking into the party

Boss: Good evening Mr. Valdespino.
Gerard: Good evening Mr. Palms.
Boss: Who is this beautiful woman you are with?
Gerard: This is my girlfriend Desiree.
We shook hands. His boss smiled. “A firm handshake from a woman, I like that. It means you are sure of yourself.”
I smiled politely, even though I wasn’t sure what he meant by that. Was he insinuating that I’m conceited?? (What is wrong with me? This is the first time I’m meeting the guy, why would he think that? My mind is imaging things. I need to relax!)

A couple of Gerard’s co-workers guided us to some empty seats at their table. We sat down and chatted with the people at the table for a long time. I was happy to find out that there was another young girl there that enjoys reading, so we got talking about random books.
As the evening went on, more couples got up to dance. Pretty soon it was just Gerard and I sitting at the table. I was looking at the music band when I felt his hand on my lap. I looked up to find him untying his tie.
“Here…” he handed me his tie. “Help me put it on.”
“Why?” I asked. “I mean you just had it tied on perfectly.”
“We need to seem a bit ‘lovey-dovey’. Stand close to me as you tie it on.”
We were still sitting at the table, so I pulled my chair closer to his. I could smell his wonderful cologne and it almost made me dizzy. My arms were around his neck for a second; I could feel him staring down at me.
“Rae…” he said” Look up at me for a second…”
I looked up into his eyes.
“Yes?” I asked, my eyes tracing his face.
“I had never noticed… your eyes are hazel. I always thought they were black.”
I laughed at his observation. When I talk with my friends or new persons, I always look at them in their eyes, Gerard on the contrary, hardly ever looks into people’s eyes. I finished tying his tie and started to move my chair back when he leaned towards me and kissed my cheek.
“Thank you.”

In the background I could hear this boss, standing on the podium, giving a Christmas speech, thanking his workers for their hard work…etc. Suddenly I heard everyone clapping, so looked over to see the boss getting off the stand. The band resume playing Christmas songs, Gerard stood up and invited me to dance. The band had beautiful slow festive songs. When the first dance finished his boss came up to me and asked me for the following dance. As we danced he started up small talk with me.
“I know the look of being in love.” He said. “You have it in your eyes every time you look at him. But Gerry… his stare towards you is not as deep.”
“Gerard covers his feelings more than I do.” I said defensively. “I hardly see how it’s your business how your employee expresses his affection to his girlfriend.
Mr. Palms smiled politely and apologized for seeming intrusive. The song ended and I excused myself.
I was standing near another table talking with one of his co-workers, Gina when I heard him call my name over the microphone. I turned around and saw him standing two meters away from me. He was smiling.
“Desiree…You look beautiful tonight.”
I am sure that blushed.
“I have something I’d like to ask you…” then he got down on one knee and holding one hand over his heart and the other putting down the microphone, he asked “Will you marry me?”
I was shocked… the way he asked was so romantic. I had small tears forming in my eyes and I walked to where he was kneeling.
“Yes” I said, almost in a whisper. “Yes…”

Everyone clapped around us. Gina, yelled “Let’s see the ring! Let’s see a kiss!”
Gerard stood up and pulled out a little black box and opened it. Inside was a beautiful white gold ring with a simple diamond in the shape of a snowflake. (how did he know? How did he remember that snowflakes were my favorite thing)
He pulled it out of the box and handed it to me. As I looked at it, I saw something engraved around it. “I’ll always love you.”
“You had it engraved?” I exclaimed. He nodded, smiled as he put the ring on my finger and kissed me. At first the kiss was quick and as he pulled away he stared into my eyes. Then he leaned in and gave me a long and soft kiss. I could feel him gently part my lips with his kiss and take my breath away. The crowed around us “ooohhh”ed and “awwwed”. It was embarrassing!! Everyone congratulated us. I couldn’t stop smiling for the rest of the evening…

Around midnight, Gerard decided it was time to take me home so we could talk to my parents. As we were driving in the car, my thoughts kept going back to the sudden kiss he gave me in front of his whole office.
“Gerry, can I ask you something?”
“Sure. What is it?”
“Do you remember two years ago at my birthday party at my house we played ‘spin the bottle’?”
He laughed at the memory. “Yes of course. I remember how nervous you were because you had never played it before and all our classmates were there. Why do you ask?”
“Well, because, do you remember we kissed?”
“Raee, I wouldn’t call it a kiss. We had a quick lip contact.” He looked at me out of the corner of his eye. “You can call what happened in the office a kiss...”
Now I was a bit nervous. “Well, at my birthday it was my first lip contact, so I count it as a first kiss, today being the second. My real question is… Had you ever kissed a girl before that or since?”
The green light before us was blinking and it turned to yellow, the car came to a stop as the light turned red. Gerard stared straight ahead; I could see him bite his lower lip, meaning he was thinking.
“No. Actually, now that I think about it, I’d never kissed a girl before. You would be my first and only girl kiss.” He turned to me and smiled.
I could feel a small glow of satisfaction when he told me I was his “first and only” female kiss. A part of me selfishly always wanted it to stay that way. I know I would always be his first, but I also wanted to be his last.
I leaned across the seat and kissed him on the cheek. He looped his arm around me and kissed the top of my head.
“How do you think your parents will react?” he asks as the traffic light turns green again.
“My dad will probably pull out his shot gun and want to kill you. My mom will be confused, but happy for me.” I laughed as I looked at his face turn into a nervous expression. “I guess in the end, they will congratulate us.”

I was lost in thought as we drove up to the front of my house. Gerard opened the car door and held my hand until we got to the front door. I told him to wait in the living-room and I would get my parents. Luckily they were upstairs in their P.J.s and bathrobe watching T.V. I asked them to come downstairs. They were a little surprised at the request, but they followed me downstairs.
Gerard: Good evening Mr. and Mrs. Knightly
Mother: Good evening Gerard.
Father: What is this about?
Gerard: I know this may be sudden, but I have asked your daughter to marry me.
Mother: Pardon?
Me: He asked me to marry him and I said ‘yes’.
Father: Are you sure?
Me: (laughing) Yes, dad. I am sure.
Mother: Wow! Oh my gosh. You’re getting married!!
My parents hugged us both. My dad still seemed surprise, but he’d always liked Gerard. My mother, the only one that knew our marriage would be a fake, was a bit upset. However she faked a smile and congratulated us.
“We’re thinking of getting married in a year.” Andrew told them. “In December, since Desirae always dreamt of a winter wedding.”

I was touched that he was going to let me have my dream wedding, a winter wedding, since he’d always wanted a summer wedding. We stayed up talking for about another hour.
As I walked Gerard outside to his car, we agreed to talk the next day to discuss “our future”.
“I really appreciate you doing this for me.” He said.
“You are my best friend…The best relationships are based on friendship.” I told him.
He smiled and told me he’d call me tomorrow to come pick me up. ] END OF DIARY ENTRY #4.

It seems like ages ago when we got engaged. I’ve often tried to reenact the proposal by writing into my novels; however it never seems to fit. My best friend Penny, often tells me: “That proposal was meant to be written just in your story.”
Maybe she is right.

Constant Updates_75 Days Till Wedding.

[Imported from original blog. Now added here to personal Marriage Blog]

Dear blog

I haven’t written here for awhile now. I apologize for that. However, I will be writing a lot more now, because in 75 days I’m getting married.

I am positive that I have not written about my engagement before, so now, 75 days before I get married, I believe it is best to document how it all came to be. I guess I’m writing this down because, to a certain extent, maybe I’m still trying to find some sense to this insane decision that I’m making.

It all began last December 19th  …two hundred and eighty six days ago…

I’m attaching the first entry to my diary of that day, because there really isn’t any other way to explain my feelings…Some parts have been edited, removed or slightly changed so that I may keep some privacy. Nevertheless don’t doubt that much of what is written here is 95% in it’s original form.

DIARY ENTRY #1

[December 19,

Dear diary,

It’s almost midnight as I write this, but I couldn’t wait until tomorrow to write down the amazing day I just had. It started out as any normal Saturday; I got up around 9:30am and had breakfast with mom. I walked the dogs and then did my laundry for the week. Dad called around noon to say he would be home early to take a nap before he and mom went out to a party they had later that evening.

Mom and I went out for lunch and to finish our Christmas shopping. While we were out shopping my friend Gerard Valdespino called me to my cellular-phone to invite me for coffee and exchange “early” Christmas gifts. I agreed to meet him at 6:00pm at the coffee shop near my house. I can’t tell you how excited I was to see him. I hadn’t seen him since school let out two weeks ago for winter vacations. It was such a difference of not seeing him every day, I really missed him. I can’t believe we just finished our fifth semester of college. I can now say we’ve known each other two years exactly. (it probably would have been two years and a half if I hadn’t been so shy in first semester when we first met. But who wouldn’t have been? He is not only very handsome but a year older than me. It was intimidating.)

The evening couldn’t come soon enough. When the time finally came around I borrowed the car and drove to the coffee shop. As usual he was there early. I admit I was excited when I saw him holding a small Christmas bag. Out of most of my college friends, he is the only one that ever is reciprocating with the gifts. After a long hug at the entrance we ordered our coffee’s and sat down at the nearest table. I had him open his gift first; it was a little pocketknife with his name engraved. He seemed excited about it and thanked me over and over for the thoughtful detail. Then he handed me the gift he got me, it was nicely wrapped in Christmas paper. I was so touched by the thought that I could have cared less what he got me. He gave me a black leather blank notebook. It is beautiful; perfect for an aspiring writer like me. We talked awhile about what we had been doing since school let out and what our plans were for Christmas and New Year. Almost every year since I met him, he travels during winter vacation and does not come back until after New Year. However this year he told me he was going to stay in town. I suggested we have a Christmas party with our group of friends. He reminded me that our small group of friends had plans and that no one would be in town in the next days. I smiled and suggested then that next year we should plan with time our parties.

“Actually” he said. “I have the business party in two days and I need a date.”

I took a drink from my coffee while I thought of who could go with him. “How about you invite your doctor friend? She is still in town, isn’t she?”

“Elsa? Yes, but she leaves tomorrow. Besides, I don’t want to take her, her boyfriend hates me as it is.”

“Does it have to be a female date? Why not just invite your boyfriend Bryce? Go as pals.”

“No! Desiree!” he laughed. “This is the newspaper’s annual Christmas party, they always take pictures. I need to take a girl that is not in a relationship…I was kind of hoping you would come with me.”

“Me? Really?” I was shocked, he always took his “model” beautiful friends to events like that. I was just the friend and coffee-buddy. Thinking of it, I am probably his only single female friend.

“Are you free the 22nd at 8:30pm?” he asked.

“Yes.” I smiled. This was exciting! He never asked me to go with him to events like his “date” before. “Is it very elegant?”

“No it is not very elegant, just formal. You could wear that silver dress you wore to Alexander’s wedding last year.”

I laughed. I can’t believe he remembered that dress after only seeing it in a picture.

“Ok. I think I can do that. I guess I need to look very nice since you’re going to get that promotion to be the Editor Supervisor.”

I saw his eyes drop, like he was disappointed. I wondered if I’d said the wrong thing until he turned to me and said that it didn’t seem like he would get the promotion because his boss thought he was too young. I argued that aged didn’t seem to be problem. He’d been working with them for over a year and had proven to be capable to handle the job, more so than any of the other workers. He smiled and thanked me for my positive thinking. He added that he had overheard this boss telling another worker that he was hesitant to give him the job because he was afraid that he could pick up and leave anytime.

“What is that suppose to mean?” I asked.

“Most of the workers are married or have a debt to the company.” He said. “They won’t leave because there is something keeping them here. I on the contrary don’t really have anything keeping me here.”

“That makes sense I guess. They don’t want to give you a high position in the company with a big pay that proves you are qualified to have a bigger-better job elsewhere.”

“You’re lucky your job is not as tricky as mine.”

“I’m just an English teacher and tutor. It’s very simple. My job doesn’t even hold Christmas parties for their employees.” I said.

I noticed him staring at me oddly and I was beginning to feel uncomfortable. I asked him if anything was wrong but he shrugged off the question by just smiling and changing the subject.

“How is your novel coming along?” he asked.

I told him that nothing exciting had happened yet, I was still on the search for a literary agent. Unfortunately I hadn’t heard anything from the agencies I had applied to. I stopped talking when I noticed his eyes staring into space. Something was bugging him, and I hoped it wasn’t me with my boring stories.

“I’m sorry. Am I boring you?...”

“Do you still love me?” he asked suddenly.

“That’s an odd question.” I replied. “I’m not in love with you if that’s what you mean.”

“No. I mean…Do you care enough for me that you would do anything for me? Like a favor?”

“Perhaps, I mean, it would depend on the favor.” I answered half-honestly. Even though I knew the correct answer would have been ‘yes, I would do anything for you.’

Gerard leaned towards me and held my hand. “Would you marry me?”

As a reflex or surprised reaction I pulled my hand away. “Pardon me?”

“Would you marry me Desiree?” he looked me straight in the eye. I wonder if he knows his stare is my weakness. But I couldn’t let feelings clog my senses or sanity.

“Marry you? Why would I…? Why would you…? Are you asking this because of your job? Gerry, I’m sure you can find another solution.”

“Yes, I am to a certain extent asking because of the job. I really want this Raee.”

“But why marriage? We are still in college. Why don’t you wait?”

“I am graduating in a year. I won’t have the opportunity to try and get this promotion then. Don’t you want to marry me? Don’t you care that much for me?”

(Great! He was playing the sympathy card!)

“Listen to me. I do care. I care a lot. I would marry you in a heartbeat, but I’m still in college and I think perhaps you are being foolish. Why do you want me? Why not your older friends?”

“I want you because I trust you and because only you know about the ‘real situation’. Only you know about the job, Bryce and you are ok with it. Look…” he took my hand in his again and this time I let him hold it longer. “Maybe not marriage, but be my fiancée. Just pretend until I graduate and I have the promotion assured. I need this job to support my family. We can just be engaged. We don’t have to get married immediately of course.”

I stared at him in awe. It seemed all too unreal. For the first year of college I was very much in love with him. Now here he was offering me the opportunity to be closer to him than ever. A little voice in my head was telling me I was going to get hurt in the long run, that by the time this “pretend” was over I would be into it so deep I could believe it was real. Yet, looking into his eyes and seeing his dark brown eyes stare at me; I knew I had already jumped into it.

“What does the ring look like?” I asked jokingly.

He looked surprised at first but then hugged me and thanked me over and over again.  We spoke about the details; I was surprised how well he seemed to have it planned out. He had already spoken to Bryce to let him know of the possible arraignment. I thought it was sweet of Bryce to be so relaxed about the situation, but then again, ever since I met him in high school he’s been like that. Gerard told me he would propose at the Christmas party. I wasn’t too crazy about the idea of a “public proposal” but he was too stubborn to listen to any suggestions. He didn’t tell me exactly how he would do it, so I’m a little excited of how things might turn out. We both agreed that after the party he would come over to my house and we would “announce” the engagement to my parents and the following evening to his mother. I thought that we were going to keep this engagement as a secret, but he insisted that for it to seem real, everyone had to believe it.

I am a bit nervous of how the family will take it. I am praying things go well.

The rest of the evening is a bit of a blur, we spoke about a lot of things.  Even though this is an arraigned marriage, or a convenient marriage, I am excited about what this next year will be like. I am honored that he chose me. From today on, I know things will never be the same. I know I’m going to be facing new challenges. I hope understand exactly what I’ve gotten myself into. I’m marring my best gay friend.

I’ll write more tomorrow. It is late and even though today was an amazing day it has come to an end. Tomorrow is a new day and a new beginning…which reminds me, I have to get that silver dressed cleaned for the party! ] END OF DIARY ENTRY

I cannot believe that it happened so suddenly. I still remember the initial excitement of looking in his eyes and having him ask me to be his fiancée. We have been through a lot this past year. Now we are down to the final months… How come it seems all so much more complicated?

I’ll write more tomorrow!

love
